Compress JPEG Images: what to know
JPG (also written JPEG) is the standard format for photos. It uses lossy compression: it drops detail your eye is unlikely to notice to make the file much smaller.
The quality setting controls that trade-off. Most photos look identical at 75 to 85, at a fraction of the size of the camera original.
Popular uses
- Photos for websites and blogs
- Product images for online stores
- Pictures for email and messaging
- Portfolio and gallery uploads
Tips for the best result
- Use 70-80 for web photos and 85-90 for anything you'll print.
- Avoid compressing the same JPG over and over; each pass loses a little more detail.
- For graphics with sharp text, PNG or WebP stays crisper than JPG.
